Hyderabad has undergone extraordinary growth over the past two decades. The expansion of the IT corridor — HITEC City, Gachibowli, Nanakramguda, and surrounding areas — created thousands of premium residential developments in zones where the HMWSSB piped supply had not yet fully extended. The result: high-quality apartments running on hard borewell water.
Hyderabad's Water Sources and TDS
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) draws primarily from the Krishna and Godavari river systems via the Nagarjunasagar and Singur reservoirs. This surface water, when delivered through the piped network, typically has TDS of 150--350 mg/L — moderately hard but manageable. However, HMWSSB supply doesn't reach all parts of the city equally.
In the Cyberabad area (Madhapur, Kondapur, Gachibowli), HITEC City, and newer developments in Narsingi, Manikonda, and Tellapur, borewell water is the primary or supplementary source. Hyderabad's Deccan Plateau geology — granite and gneiss — produces groundwater at 400--700 mg/L TDS. The Telangana government's 2024 groundwater report notes that parts of Rangareddy and Medchal districts show elevated mineral content.
The Borewell Premium Apartment Problem
The same pattern seen in Bangalore applies in Hyderabad's expanded IT corridor: the most expensive apartments are the ones most affected by hard water. A ₹1.5 crore flat in a Kondapur high-rise with German bathroom fittings runs on borewell water at 500--600 mg/L and develops scale on glass within a week of possession.
Many Hyderabad residents report that their bathrooms in older areas of the city (Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Secunderabad) with established HMWSSB connections look better maintained than bathrooms in newer premium zones on borewell supply, even when less time and money has been spent on maintenance.
The Maintenance Approach for Hyderabad
At 400--600 mg/L, bi-weekly acid treatment is the recommended minimum for glass — every 10--14 days. Weekly is better for glass directly in the shower spray path. Chrome taps benefit from daily dry-wiping and weekly acid treatment. The squeegee routine is effective at this TDS level and can extend acid treatment intervals, but doesn't replace them.
The fluoride context from the CGWB 2024 report is worth noting for Hyderabad: 16.5% of Telangana groundwater samples exceed BIS fluoride limits. This is primarily a drinking water concern (RO purification recommended), not a bathroom surface problem, since fluoride doesn't contribute to scale formation at the concentrations present.
