WHATSAPPLINKEDIN

Conversations in expat communities in Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad consistently surface the same observation: their cleaning products don't work, their hair condition deteriorated within months, and their bathroom fittings developed deposits that look years old within weeks of moving in. They're not using worse products or cleaning less carefully. They're dealing with fundamentally different water.

What Makes Indian Water Different

Most of Western Europe has naturally soft to moderately hard water - typically 50--200 mg/L TDS from surface water catchments in granite and slate highlands. Germany and Switzerland have the hardest water in Western Europe at 200--300 mg/L in hard water zones - considered extreme there. Singapore, Hong Kong, and coastal Southeast Asian cities draw from tropical surface water at 30--100 mg/L TDS. Australia's coastal cities average 100--200 mg/L.

Indian borewell water in hard water cities is 400--1000 mg/L - three to five times harder than what most European or Southeast Asian expats have ever experienced. The cleaning product formulations they brought or their preferred international brands sold in India are calibrated for water at 150--200 mg/L. Applied to 600 mg/L water, they're simply underformulated for the task.

The Hair and Skin Shock

Many expats report dramatic changes in hair condition within 3--6 months of arriving in Delhi or Bangalore. Hair that was healthy and easy to manage in London or Singapore becomes dry, rough, and dull. Skin becomes drier. These effects are real and are consistent with the documented effects of hard water on hair and skin discussed in earlier articles. The dramatic subjective experience is because the shift is so large - from 100 mg/L to 600 mg/L is a qualitative change in water character, not just a quantitative one.

The Adjustment Approach

Understand that the issue is the water, not the climate or your health. Test your TDS. Shift to acid-based bathroom cleaners formulated for Indian TDS conditions. Use chelating shampoo weekly for hair. Keep a squeegee in the shower. These adjustments resolve most hard-water-related issues within a few weeks. The water isn't going to change; adapting your products and maintenance approach to the water is the practical response.
